CloseThe Aboriginal flag was designed by artist Harold Thomas (Luritja) in 1970, and has since been embraced by First Peoples communities as a symbol of shared strength and resistance.
For those who don't know, the flag represents the Aboriginal people (top black strip), the land (bottom red strip), and the sun (centre yellow circle). Together these colours and shapes symbolise the connection First Peoples have to Country and to each other.
“The Flag represents the timeless history of our land and our people’s time on it. It is an introspection and appreciation of who we are. It draws from the history of our ancestors, our land, and our identity and will honour these well into the future.”
— Harold Thomas, 'Free use of Aboriginal Flag secured for all Australians' Media Release, 2022
