CloseThese works are a vibrant tribute to the deep and enduring connection between children and their cultural identity. Inspired by the movements of iconic animals such as the kangaroo, koala, crow, kookaburra, and emu, the piece captures not just physical motion, but the spiritual essence and cultural significance of each creature.
Through these gestures, the artist explores the idea that children connect intuitively to their culture and, through this, connect to Country. The animals become symbols of guidance and guardianship, helping the next generation walk strong in culture.
Created in response to the 2025 NAIDOC theme “The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy,” this work speaks to the powerful role of culture in shaping identity from a young age. It honours the knowledge passed down through stories, movement, and lived experience—acknowledging that children carry not only their ancestors' legacy but also the vision to shape the future.
This artwork is both a celebration and a call to recognition: that the strength of the next generation lies in their cultural grounding, their connection to the land and its beings, and their ability to move forward while holding tightly to where they’ve come from.
