CloseIn 2016 the Koorie Heritage Trust presented the exhibition 'Close to You: The Lisa Bellear Picture Show,' a tribute to the late Lisa Bellear's life and work.
Lisa (Goernpil, Minjungbul and South Sea Islander) captured thousands of photographs showing community life, including NAIDOC marches, rallies, signs, and political graffiti. As a photographer, poet, academic, and Indigenous rights activist, Lisa was and continues to be widely admired by First Peoples communities in Narrm (Melbourne) and beyond.
"Looking at the photos throws you back into the days when community was strong, we all went to the same gig, meeting, protest, because it was the only one on. There were internal fights, but at the end of the day, we were all fighting the same fight.
And that is the intention - a reminder of how to be an activist. How to be an upstanding, member of the Koori community. How to be righteous. Like how we were taught by the Aunts. How to call out injustice and how to imagine. To create a world where you can be Blak and free. Self-determination in action. Time to pass it on."
